About the role

Moorepay is transforming. We are a trusted leader in UK Payroll and HR solutions, but we aren't resting on our history. We are embarking on a major digital transformation to redefine how businesses manage their most important asset: their people.

We are seeking a Senior Product Designer as one of the first key hires in this new function, responsible for defining not just how the product looks, but how it works, how it speaks, and how it scales.

We are building a team to deliver a sophisticated, intelligent environment that transforms how SMEs handle complex compliance tasks, making them simple and intuitive. This is a strategic partnership role where you will work alongside Engineering and Product leadership to define the "Design Operating System" that allows us to ship high-quality software at speed.

Why this role is unique:

Most "transformation" roles in legacy enterprises are UI modernisation projects with limited strategic scope. This is different.

You'll define a new platform from first principles — greenfield strategy, architecture, and interaction models — while leveraging the distribution, domain expertise, and resources of a 500+ person established company backed by Zellis Group.

You get start-up autonomy with enterprise stability. You'll shape the product, not inherit someone else's compromises.

Why Join?

  • Leadership Pipeline: As a founding member of this new function, you'll grow into formal leadership as the team scales, shaping not just the work but the culture and capabilities of the function.
  • Scale: Your work will solve critical compliance and operational challenges for thousands of UK businesses.
  • Cutting Edge: Stay at the forefront of Product Design by solving challenges around intelligent automation, trust calibration, and adaptive interfaces.
  • Rare Greenfield Opportunity: Most enterprise transformation roles are constrained by legacy compromises. Here, you'll define the product design roadmap for a new platform from first principles.

The Partnership (The Core Trio)

You will form a "Core Trio" with the Senior UX Researcher and Product Manager. This is a partnership model where decisions are made collaboratively, and each discipline has equal weight within their domain.

The AI & Tooling Stack

We encourage experimentation with emerging AI-accelerated tools to buy us speed and quality. You're not expected to have mastered all of these, but you should be excited to explore:

  • Core Design: Figma (Advanced proficiency: Variables, Dev Mode).
  • Prototyping: Framer or Protopie (crucial for mocking up complex/interactive flows).
  • Generative UI: Experimentation with tools like Galileo AI or Uizard.
  • Vision Prototypes: Use AI or rapid prototyping tools to create "North Star" concepts that visualise the future state and drive stakeholder alignment.
This is a full time, permanent role working on a hybrid basis 3 days per week in Manchester.

Key responsibilities:

End-to-End Product Leadership

  • Shape the Roadmap: You are not just executing tickets; you have decision-making authority within your domain. You will take abstract technical capabilities (backend automation) and turn them into human-centric workflows.
  • User Control & Oversight: Define interaction patterns that allow users to delegate tasks confidently to the system while maintaining appropriate oversight and intervention points.
  • Commercial Awareness: You understand that design decisions have P&L impact. You can articulate how UX improvements reduce support costs, increase adoption velocity, and enable premium positioning.

Designing for Trust & Transparency

  • Tackle Complexity: Design complex, logic-heavy workflows (e.g., Onboarding, Pay Runs, HMRC submissions). You will translate regulatory complexity into "zero-anxiety" interfaces.
  • Visibility of System Status: As we automate complex tasks, your designs must keep the user informed. You will solve the challenge of "how does the user know the system did the job correctly?"
  • Error Recovery Loops: Automation isn't perfect. You will design graceful "human-in-the-loop" workflows that allow users to intervene, correct, or take over when the system is unsure, without breaking the experience.

Behavioural Design & Content

  • Design for Anxiety: Payroll is high stakes. You must design interfaces that provide reassurance and error prevention, especially when the system is acting on the user's behalf.
  • Own the Language: You will own the UX writing and micro-copy within your flows, ensuring the product speaks clearly to non-technical users.

Design System Architecture

  • Build for Scale: Lead the creation of a scalable Design System (React/Tailwind aligned) that can support both traditional UI components and new interaction patterns.
  • Foundational Accessibility: Champion accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA) from the ground up — ensuring our components are inclusive by default.

Execution Ownership (The Founding Reality)

  • Founding Designer: As the first design hire, you will be hands-on across the full stack — from high-fidelity UI and Figma library management to documentation. This is not delegation work; this is defining the standards.
  • Go-to-Market Support: In a founding environment, we all contribute to the full product experience. You may support launch assets and onboarding flows to ensure cohesive user journeys.

Skills & experience

  • Systems Thinker: Proven Product Design experience in B2B SaaS or data-heavy applications.
  • Pragmatic Innovator: You know how to balance the "perfect" design vision with the realities of technical constraints and legacy migration.
  • Interaction Specialist: Experience designing conversational flows, progressive disclosure patterns, or adaptive interfaces is highly desirable. You understand that effective interaction design goes beyond traditional form-based patterns.
  • System & Data Modelling: You understand principles of object-oriented design and can define object-action relationships clearly.
  • Facilitator: You can lead workshops with diverse stakeholders, mapping out current legacy processes and reimagining them as automated flows.
  • Domain Agnostic: You don't need prior HR or Payroll experience, but you must be excited to tackle high-stakes, complex domains.
